DC Specific Fiduciary Estates as it Relates to Probate Filings
Nicole Stevens, Registrar of Wills
This presentation will cover the essential roles and responsibilities of personal representatives, trustees, and court-appointed guardians, including the required steps for handling both foreign and domestic estates. It will explore the differences in estate administration before and after 1981, along with necessary filings in Washington, D.C., such as claims and taxes, and the implications of federal and local estate taxes. Key topics will also include the management of estate values, creditor claims, and the distinction between testate and intestate estates, highlighting important deadlines and red flags, such as fraud and impersonation, that may arise in the process. The session will provide insights into the powers and appointments of trustees and guardians, including their authority and timing considerations.

Since the establishment of the Department of Buildings (DOB), the Office of Surveyor has undergone significant changes in its operations and record management. The Office maintains various types of records, including subdivision plats, wall tests, and surveys, each serving distinct purposes in property and land development. Understanding the differences between these records is key to navigating the city's property data. The SurDocs platform is a valuable tool for searching and accessing these records, which reflect the unique characteristics of DC's surveys, properties, and land use regulations.

Underwriting of commitments when property is in or was subjected to bankruptcy, the various forms of parties involved, pleadings, and timetables, suggestions for the conduct of closings and sale of properties.

This seminar will be submitted to the District of Columbia Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking for 4.0 title credit hours, DC Specific. The courses level is intermediate.

$125/members; $165/non-members 
Regular Registration
$165/members; $215/non-members 

METHOD OF PAYMENT:
Credit card payments can only be made online. To pay by check, please download the registration brochure and make check payable to DCLTA. A $25 fee will be charged for returned checks. 


CANCELLATIONS:

Cancellations received by noon, April 25, 2025, will be refunded, less a $50.00 fee. Substitutions of participants are permitted.
